Meet Dr.Craig Browdy!
Dr. Browdy’s illustrious career in marine shrimp research and aquaculture spans over 40 years, showcasing his expertise and significant contributions to the field. As a past president and fellow of the hashtagWorldAquacultureSociety, Dr. Browdy has played a pivotal role in advancing the knowledge and practices related to shrimp farming. Dr. Browdy’s early work focused on the physiology and control of shrimp reproduction, as well as the development of techniques for rearing shrimp broodstock. This foundational research laid the groundwork for advancements in shrimp breeding practices.
Genetic Improvement of Shrimp:
During the 1990s, Dr. Browdy was involved in the pioneering development of genetically improved hashtagspecificpathogenfree shrimp. His contributions as a member of technical and executive teams of the USDA-funded US Marine Shrimp Farming Program Consortium played a crucial role in shaping the industry during that period.
Biofloc-Based Shrimp Production Systems:
Dr. Browdy led the research at the Waddell Mariculture Center on the development and microbial ecology of zero exchange hashtagbioflocbasedshrimp pond and raceway production systems. This work reflects his commitment to sustainable and intensive shrimp farming practices.

As a founding member of the South Carolina Marine Genomics group, Dr. Browdy contributed to fundamental research on shrimp genomics. His involvement in developing and applying the first shrimp microarrays to study shrimp immune mechanisms led to a patent on the application of RNA interference for gene silencing in shrimp.
Commercial Aquaculture Research Leadership:
Over the past 16 years, Dr. Browdy has held leadership positions in commercial aquaculture research at Novus International and Zeigler Bros. Inc. The establishment and operation of basic and applied aquaculture research centers at both companies facilitated the commercialization of new nutritional technologies and products, thereby improving shrimp hashtaghealth hashtagsolutions, hashtagfeeds, and hashtagfeedingprograms.
Authorship and Editorial Contributions:
Dr. Browdy’s prolific academic contributions include authoring over 140 publications and editing three books on Marine Shrimp Farming. His publications and edited works have likely been instrumental in disseminating knowledge and shaping best practices within the aquaculture community.
